Welcome to Nepal! Your journey begins as you land at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, where a friendly representative from Places Nepal Treks will greet you and escort you to your hotel in Thamel, the vibrant cultural heart of the capital. After settling in and freshening up, join us for a pre-trek briefing where our experienced trek leader will walk you through the route, safety tips, and essential gear. In the evening, take a leisurely stroll through Thamel’s colorful streets and enjoy your first authentic Nepali meal, preparing your spirit for the adventure ahead.
We begin our Himalayan adventure with a long, scenic drive towards Maccha Khola, the starting point of our trek. You can choose between a local bus for an immersive cultural experience or a private jeep for a more comfortable ride. The road winds along the Prithvi Highway, flanked by terraced hills and countryside views, before turning into a rugged, bumpy trail as we head deeper into the mountains. After 8–10 hours of travel, we reach Maccha Khola, a serene riverside village nestled along the Budi Gandaki River.
Today marks the beginning of our trek as we follow the winding path along the Budi Gandaki River. The trail leads us through forested areas, suspension bridges, and charming Gurung and Magar villages like Khorlabesi and Tatopani, known for its natural hot springs. As we gradually ascend, the scenery transforms into a mix of waterfalls, narrow canyons, and rice terraces. After 6–7 hours of trekking, we arrive at Jagat, a traditional stone village where we’ll spend the night.
Leaving Jagat, we briefly follow the popular Manaslu Circuit Trail, passing through picturesque villages such as Salleri, Sirdibas, and Philm. From Ekle Bhatti, we leave the main Manaslu route and veer into the lesser-trodden Tsum Valley. The trail becomes quieter and more pristine as we ascend into denser forests and across thrilling suspension bridges. Upon reaching Lokpa, the first village in Tsum Valley, we're greeted with awe-inspiring views of Himalchuli (7,893m) and Boudha Himal (6,672m).
Our trail today climbs steadily through forests of pine, rhododendron, and juniper, offering intermittent glimpses of snow-covered peaks. The trail crosses wooden bridges and landslide-prone zones before finally descending to Chumling, a quaint village that radiates Tibetan influence. Narrow stone-paved lanes, fluttering prayer flags, and ancient monasteries like Panago and Gurwa Gompas await your exploration in the afternoon.
We continue deeper into the upper Tsum Valley, navigating across a challenging landslide area and gradually climbing a ridge that rewards us with sweeping views of the majestic Ganesh Himal (7,422m). The trail then brings us to Chekampar, a village rich in Tibetan culture, surrounded by ancient mani walls, colorful chortens, and alpine landscapes. Tonight, enjoy the clear mountain air and a night sky illuminated with stars in this high-altitude village.
The journey continues northward toward the Nile, the last village before the Tibetan border. En route, we visit the sacred Milarepa’s Cave, where the great Tibetan saint meditated, and Rachen Gompa, a revered nunnery nestled in the heart of the valley. This stretch is both culturally and spiritually enriching, surrounded by quiet landscapes and traditional Tibetan homes. As you arrive in Nile, you’ll feel a profound sense of tranquility unique to this remote Himalayan region.
Today is a spiritual highlight as we hike to Mu Gompa, the largest and most significant monastery in the Tsum Valley. The trail ascends through barren alpine terrain with uninterrupted views of towering snow-capped peaks. At the monastery, we’ll observe monks performing daily rituals, explore intricate murals, and soak in the profound peace of this sacred site. Depending on your pace and interest, we may either return to Nile for the night or stay at the basic guesthouse near Mu Gompa.
We retrace our steps today, heading back toward Chumling. The downhill trek offers a different perspective of the stunning valley and its serene landscapes. We’ll pass through familiar villages and yak pastures, enjoying the warmth of the lower elevation and the greenery that slowly returns as we descend. Once back in Chumling, relax and reflect on your remarkable journey through one of Nepal’s most secluded valleys.
Our descent continues through forests, terraced hills, and riverside paths. We cross the Siyar Khola on a suspension bridge and make a stop at the breathtaking Samba Falls, a hidden gem tucked into the lush wilderness. The trail leads us through small settlements, where locals welcome us with warm smiles. We reach Philim, a culturally rich village with a school and community initiatives supported by foreign aid. This village offers a peaceful overnight stay surrounded by greenery.
Today marks our final full day on the trail. We follow the familiar path along the Budi Gandaki River, passing through Labubesi and other rural villages. The trail offers scenic views of waterfalls, farmlands, and the distant hills. Our last night on the trek is spent in Maccha Khola, where we celebrate the completion of our extraordinary Himalayan journey over a hearty local meal.
We begin the day with a short trek to Arughat, where our vehicle awaits for the return drive to Kathmandu. The drive, though long and bumpy at times, gives us one final look at the Nepali countryside, its rivers, farms, and forests. Upon arriving in Kathmandu, we check into our hotel and later gather for a farewell dinner hosted by Places Nepal Treks, where we share stories, laughter, and memories from the trek.
Our incredible Tsum Valley adventure comes to a close. A Places Nepal Treks representative will escort you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey. As you fly out of Kathmandu, you leave with a heart full of memories, photographs, and the enduring spirit of the Himalayas.

The Tsum Valley Trek is rated as Challenging.
The Tsum Valley Trek is a demanding and deeply rewarding Himalayan journey, best suited for seasoned trekkers looking to escape Nepal’s mainstream trails. Tucked away in the remote northern Gorkha region, near the Tibetan border, this trek offers a rare glimpse into one of the most culturally preserved and spiritually rich regions of the Himalayas.
Expect 6 to 8 hours of trekking per day, often on steep ascents, narrow ridgelines, and rugged paths. The trail climbs to Mu Gompa at 3,700 meters (12,139 ft), where the effects of high altitude can be felt. There are no dedicated acclimatization days, so prior experience at elevation and strong physical conditioning are essential.
Accommodations are basic—rustic teahouses with shared rooms, limited amenities, and occasional hot showers or electricity available at extra cost. You'll be trekking through isolated terrain with little to no phone or internet connectivity, adding to the raw, immersive nature of the experience.
While daily breakfasts are included, you’ll need to cover your own lunches and dinners at local teahouses along the way. Typical meals include hearty, traditional Himalayan staples such as dal bhat (lentils and rice), Tibetan bread, momos, thukpa, and fried noodles.
This trek is not for the faint of heart. It requires:
Excellent cardiovascular fitness
Regular hill training and strength preparation
Experience with multi-day hikes at altitude
What it offers in return is unparalleled: serene landscapes, ancient monasteries, Tibetan-influenced culture, and far fewer trekkers than routes like the Manaslu Circuit. For those ready to embrace the physical and mental challenges, the Tsum Valley Trek delivers an unforgettable adventure into one of Nepal’s last hidden Himalayan sanctuaries.
The weather on the Tsum Valley Trek is shaped by its location in the Himalayan rain shadow, which results in drier conditions compared to other trekking regions in Nepal. Still, seasonal changes can be dramatic, influencing visibility, trail conditions, and overall trekking experience.
We aim to provide you with a worry-free Himalayan adventure. Your Tsum Valley Trek package includes the following services and amenities to ensure a smooth, safe, and memorable trekking experience:
While we strive to cover most essentials, the following items are not included in the Tsum Valley Trek package:
Physical preparation is key to enjoying and completing the Tsum Valley Trek, which involves multiple days of trekking through rugged Himalayan terrain, steep climbs, and high altitudes above 3,700 meters (12,000 feet).
Packing the right gear is crucial for a successful and safe experience on the Tsum Valley Trek, where weather and terrain vary widely. Here’s a comprehensive checklist of what you’ll need:
The Tsum Valley Trek is one of Nepal’s most secluded and spiritually enriching trekking adventures. Tucked away in the northern Gorkha district near the Tibetan border, this sacred Himalayan valley remained off-limits to outsiders until 2008.
Known as the “Hidden Valley of Happiness”, it offers a rare opportunity to explore a land untouched by time, steeped in Tibetan Buddhism, and surrounded by awe-inspiring mountain scenery.
Unlike the busier trails of Everest or Annapurna, the Tsum Valley offers a quieter, more intimate experience—ideal for trekkers looking for solitude, cultural immersion, and raw natural beauty.
This is not just a trek; it’s a cultural pilgrimage through an ancient landscape shaped by faith, isolation, and harmony with nature.
Your journey begins with a long but scenic drive from Kathmandu to Maccha Khola (930m), the trek’s trailhead. From there, you follow the Budhi Gandaki River through lush forests, suspension bridges, and terraced hillsides before branching off the Manaslu Circuit at Lokpa, entering the sacred Tsum Valley.
The trail leads through picturesque villages like Chumling, Chhokangparo, Nile, and finally Mu Gompa (3,700m), the spiritual pinnacle of the region.
These remote settlements are home to the Tsumbas, an indigenous Tibetan-descended people who preserve their ancient customs and language in this isolated mountain sanctuary.
Expect 6–8 hours of trekking per day across varied terrain: rocky trails, narrow ridges, river crossings, and forested paths. The trek gradually gains altitude, reaching its highest point at Mu Gompa, but does not include a technical summit.
The Tsum Valley is deeply connected to Tibetan Buddhism. It’s believed that Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) meditated here during the 8th century, making it a revered pilgrimage site.
The landscape is adorned with mani walls, chortens, prayer flags, and age-old monasteries that serve as active centers of spiritual life.
Key religious sites include:
Mu Gompa – the largest monastery in the valley, set against dramatic Himalayan backdrops
Rachen Nunnery – a peaceful and culturally rich retreat for Buddhist nuns
Milarepa’s Cave – said to be where the great saint meditated
You’ll witness monastic rituals, interact with locals living in centuries-old ways, and feel immersed in a lifestyle shaped by devotion and harmony with nature.
Throughout the trek, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramas of Ganesh Himal, Boudha Himal, Sringi Himal, and Himalchuli. Unlike popular treks with crowds and commercial teahouses, Tsum Valley’s landscapes remain pristine, offering a more untouched, serene experience of the mountains.
Located within the Manaslu Conservation Area, the Tsum Valley is a biodiversity hotspot. The lower regions are covered in dense forests of rhododendron, pine, oak, and bamboo, while higher elevations are marked by alpine meadows and rare Himalayan herbs.
Wildlife you may encounter includes:
Himalayan Thar
Blue Sheep
Musk Deer
Pikas and Marmots
If lucky, signs of the elusive Snow Leopard
Birdlife is equally vibrant, with sightings of Himalayan Monals, lammergeiers, snow pigeons, and griffon vultures common along the trail.
While Kathmandu offers hotel comfort, the trek itself involves staying in basic teahouses. These lodges provide simple twin-sharing rooms, hearty meals (dal bhat, noodles, Tibetan bread), and limited facilities—some with hot showers and electricity at an extra cost. Expect rustic conditions, but warm hospitality from the locals.
The Tsum Valley is a restricted region, and special permits are required:
Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)
Solo trekking is not permitted. You must trek with a licensed guide through a registered agency like Places Nepal Treks and Expedition. This ensures safety, navigation support, and cultural sensitivity.
Off-the-beaten-path experience far from crowds
Deep cultural immersion in authentic Tibetan Buddhist communities
Dramatic Himalayan scenery with fewer tourists
Spiritual pilgrimage sites and ancient monasteries
Rare wildlife sightings and rich biodiversity
Genuine local encounters in one of Nepal’s most untouched areas
