Ghorepani Poon Hill vs Annapurna Base Camp

Choose Ghorepani Poon Hill if you want a shorter, easier Himalayan trek built around one exceptional sunrise viewpoint. Choose Annapurna Base Camp if you want to go deeper into the Annapurna Sanctuary and actually stand at 4,130 m, surrounded by peaks on every side. Both sit in the same region and share some of the same trail, but they're built for different trips — one is a taste of the Himalaya in under a week, the other is a full high-altitude trek.

Which Trek Is Harder?

Annapurna Base Camp is harder overall. The gap comes down to a few concrete factors, not vague difficulty ratings:

Neither trek is extreme. Poon Hill is genuinely accessible to most reasonably active people with no training; ABC rewards some fitness preparation but doesn't require technical skill or prior high-altitude experience.

Which Trek Is Higher?

Poon Hill's summit sits at 3,210 m. Annapurna Base Camp reaches 4,130 m — a 920 m difference that matters more than the number suggests. Below roughly 3,500 m, altitude sickness is uncommon; above it, your body needs real acclimatisation time. ABC's itinerary builds this in, but it's still the difference between a trek where altitude is barely a conversation (Poon Hill) and one where it's a genuine, manageable consideration (ABC). We won't turn this into a full altitude-sickness guide here — see our Annapurna region altitude sickness guide for the complete picture if ABC is your choice.

Which Has Better Mountain Views?

Poon Hill delivers one of the most efficient payoffs in Nepal trekking: a single pre-dawn hike to a viewpoint with a genuinely panoramic sweep — Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, Nilgiri, and Hiunchuli all visible at once, without days of walking to earn it.

ABC trades that efficiency for immersion. You spend your final days walking directly into a natural amphitheater, with peaks rising on every side rather than viewed from a distance. It's a fundamentally different kind of scenery — less about one sweeping panorama, more about being surrounded.

Poon Hill is excellent for a panoramic viewpoint; ABC is better for an immersive high-mountain experience. Neither is objectively superior — they're different rewards for different amounts of effort.

Which Trek Is Better for Beginners?

Ghorepani Poon Hill, generally. It's shorter, reaches a lower altitude, involves simpler logistics, and asks less of your body overall — a genuinely good introduction to Himalayan trekking without much risk of feeling in over your head.

That said, ABC is also entirely achievable for reasonably fit first-time trekkers with proper preparation. It's not a specialist's trek. If you have the time and want the deeper experience, don't rule it out just because you're new to trekking — just train a little and choose the longer, more gradual itinerary over a compressed one.

Which Trek Is Better If You Only Have 4–6 Days?

Choose Poon Hill. If your Nepal itinerary only has room for a short trek, ABC's genuine version doesn't compress well without becoming a very different, much harder trip (more on that below). Poon Hill is built for exactly this window.

We run two versions:

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek – 6 Days — the fuller version, with a more gradual pace through Ulleri, Ghorepani, Poon Hill, and Ghandruk, and more room to actually enjoy the villages along the way rather than rushing through them.

What If I Have Only 5 Days but Want Annapurna Base Camp?

If ABC is the goal and five days is what you've got, our Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek – 5 Days gets you there — but go in with accurate expectations. This is a genuinely demanding itinerary: rapid ascent to 4,130 m over three days of uphill trekking, 6–7 hour days, and a itinerary described plainly on our own trip page as a "demanding 5-day high-altitude trek for fit adventurers." It's better suited to trekkers who are comfortable with long walking days and fast elevation gain than to first-timers looking for an easy introduction.

Current pricing runs from $150 per person (larger groups) up to $320 for a solo private trek, with the standard 2–5 person rate around $250 — confirm exact current rates on the trip page, since these can shift.

What If I Want a More Relaxed ABC Trek?

Our standard Annapurna Base Camp Trek is the answer — the same destination, the same 4,130 m amphitheater, but spread across a longer itinerary that gives your body real time to acclimatise and gives you room to actually experience Ghorepani, Chhomrong, and the Sanctuary approach rather than rushing through them. If the 5-day version's pace sounds like more stress than adventure, this is the version to book instead. Check the trip page for current duration and pricing.

Poon Hill vs ABC Cost

Price depends on several factors regardless of which trek you choose: duration, group size, transportation, guide, porter, accommodation, meals, and permits. Longer treks with more remote, higher-altitude sections generally cost more per day than short, lower-altitude ones.

Short ABC – 5 Days5 daysFrom $150–$320 per person depending on group size

As a general pattern: Poon Hill is meaningfully cheaper than any ABC option, and within ABC, the compressed 5-day version tends to run lower than the fuller itinerary despite reaching the same destination, since it simply requires fewer days of guide, accommodation, and permits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Poon Hill easier than ABC? Yes, notably — lower altitude, shorter duration, and less demanding walking days throughout.

Is Poon Hill better than ABC? Neither is "better" — they're different trips. Poon Hill wins on efficiency and ease; ABC wins on immersion and altitude.

Which is higher, Poon Hill or ABC? ABC, by 920 m — Poon Hill reaches 3,210 m, ABC reaches 4,130 m.

Which is better for beginners? Poon Hill, generally, though ABC is achievable for reasonably fit first-timers with proper preparation.

How many days do I need for Poon Hill? 4–6 days is typical, depending on the specific itinerary and pace.

How many days do I need for ABC? 5–12 days, depending on route — 5 days for the compressed version, up to 12 for a fuller, more gradual itinerary.

Can I do ABC in 5 days? Yes, via our Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek, though it's a genuinely demanding, fast-paced itinerary rather than an easy option.

Is ABC harder than Poon Hill? Yes, across altitude, walking hours, elevation gain, and overall duration.

Which has better mountain views? Different rather than better — Poon Hill for one sweeping panorama, ABC for an immersive, surrounded-by-peaks experience.

Which trek is better in October? Both are excellent in October — it's peak season for clear skies and stable weather across the Annapurna region, though also the busiest month on both trails.

Can I do Poon Hill without a porter? Yes — given the shorter duration and lower altitude, most reasonably fit trekkers carry their own daypack comfortably, though a porter remains available if you'd prefer one.

Can I combine Poon Hill with ABC? Yes — many itineraries route through Ghorepani and Poon Hill on the way to ABC, effectively combining both experiences in one longer trip. Ask us about combined itinerary options if this appeals to you.
