Pikey Peak Trek is a hidden trail in Nepal. It offers panoramic Himalayan views, including Everest and Makalu, combined with rich Sherpa culture and beautiful ridge-lined trekking landscapes. This easy trek is perfect for adventurers and photographers seeking off-the-beaten-path serenity.

Our journey began with an early 4 AM jeep departure from Kathmandu, rumbling through the scenic countryside. With pit stops for breakfast and lunch, the 10-hour drive was long but picturesque, giving us glimpses of rural Nepal. We reached Dhap Bazaar by around 2:30 PM—tired, but excited to begin the trek.

Instead of resting, we pushed ahead to Jhapre, where we planned to spend the night. The trail was gentle and mostly followed a quiet off-road route, with barely a vehicle in sight.

May is pre-monsoon season in Nepal, and we were lucky to catch only brief showers—fast-moving clouds would roll in, mist the trail, and vanish just as quickly.

Upon arriving in Jhapre, we were welcomed with a hearty plate of Dal-Bhat—a classic Nepali meal—and turned in early, ready for the trek ahead.

Morning in Jhapre

A beautiful sunrise greeted us. After a light breakfast of corn roti and tarkari, we paid a quick visit to the Jalakanya Devi Monastery, taking in the peaceful atmosphere before setting out toward Pikey Peak Base Camp.

Breakfast:

Today’s trail followed a scenic ridgeline with sweeping views and blooming alpine meadows.

We hiked from Jhapre (2931m) to the base camp at 3738m, covering a distance of around 14 kilometers.

Lunch Stop: Bhubule
A small teahouse provided simple but delicious food to fuel the ascent.

Rest Stop: Bouda (3550m)
A much-needed break with views that made every step worthwhile.

As we neared base camp, the skies began to darken. The mist rolled in, and visibility dropped—an ominous sign for our summit morning. We could only hope for clearer skies by dawn.

We woke at 3 AM. To our relief, the skies had cleared—stars glittered above us as we set off by headlamp.

What followed was the highlight of the trek: 360-degree Himalayan views from the top of Pikey Peak.

Prayer flags flutter in the wind atop Pikey Peak, framing a spectacular Himalayan panorama.

From the summit, we stood above the clouds, wrapped in silence and morning light.

Snow-capped giants pierced the horizon—an unforgettable view from one of Nepal’s most underrated vantage points.

Spending nearly an hour soaking in the vistas and capturing the moment

We began our descent toward Junbesi, a charming Sherpa village nestled deep in the valley below.

Junbesi: A Tranquil Sherpa Village at 2,700 Meters (8,858 Feet)As we arrived, we watched Sherpa women harvesting barley, their colorful dresses bright against the green fields—a beautiful scene of daily life in the high Himalayas.

One of the highlights of our visit was the Thupten Chöling Monastery, quietly tucked away in the surrounding hills.
Founded in the 1960s, this spiritual sanctuary is home to around 400 monks and nuns, and remains an important center for Tibetan Buddhist practice in the region.
