Kanchenjunga is a remote trek, and you should plan for stretches with no phone signal, patchy mobile data, and little or no Wi-Fi. Charging is available in a number of lodges, but on this route it is never something to assume — it's something you plan around. That's not a warning to put you off; it's the same honest brief we give every Places Nepal trekker at the pre-departure meeting in Thamel, and it applies whether you're checking messages in Ghunsa or simply wondering whether you'll be able to tell your family you're safe from Pangpema.
This guide covers what actually happens to your phone, your data plan, and your power bank across our 17-day Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek — from the moment you land in Bhadrapur to the morning you fly back out. We've built it directly from our own operating itinerary, from Nepal Telecom's own network announcements for this exact region, and from the general, well-documented behaviour of Nepal's two mobile networks at altitude. Where the picture is unclear — and on a route this remote, parts of it are — we say so rather than a village-by-village certainty that doesn't exist.
Connectivity on the Kanchenjunga Circuit follows a rough shape, not a straight line, because the route itself is a there-and-back loop rather than a single push into the mountains:
Availability is not the same as reliability anywhere on this list. A village having electricity doesn't mean it has signal. A lodge having Wi-Fi doesn't mean it's fast, or working the day you arrive. Treat every claim below as a likely pattern for trip planning, not a guarantee for any specific afternoon.
There are three ways you might get online on this route, and their availability changes completely as you gain altitude and move away from Ghunsa.
Mobile data is the most practical option wherever a signal reaches — it's what most trekkers actually end up using for messages and the odd photo upload in the lower and middle sections of the trek.
Lodge Wi-Fi exists in a handful of settlements, most reliably in Ghunsa, where at least one lodge offers satellite-based Wi-Fi alongside solar power. It is nowhere near as consistent as Wi-Fi on the Everest or Annapurna trails, where dedicated commercial networks (Everest Link, for instance) have been built specifically to serve trekkers. On Kanchenjunga, Wi-Fi is still a lodge-by-lodge amenity rather than a route-wide system.
No connection at all is a completely normal state for long stretches of this trek — at Lhonak, on the Sele La traverse, and around both base camps. This isn't a failure of anything; it's the geography of Nepal's remotest major trekking corridor.
Wi-Fi quality where it does exist depends on the lodge's power supply, the weather, how many trekkers are sharing the connection, and — for anything satellite-based — cloud cover. Don't expect speeds, because none are meaningful for this route, and don't expect this trek to resemble the well-wired teahouses of Namche Bazaar or Manang.
Signal coverage on Kanchenjunga is uneven in a way that has as much to do with the landscape as with the telecom operators. The trail spends most of its time in a narrow river gorge (the Ghunsa Khola, then the Simbuwa Khola) walled in by ridgelines that block line of sight to distant towers. Even where a cell tower exists nearby, the valley floor you're walking on may simply not see it.
A few patterns hold across the route:
We won't claim a specific bar count for a specific teahouse, because that varies by handset, network, weather, and season. What we can say with confidence, because it comes from our own current itinerary, is that mobile signal on this trek is strong in the lower valley, workable in Ghunsa, and largely absent from Khambachen onward until you're back down near Ghunsa or close to the southern settlements again.
Nepal has two mobile networks: Nepal Telecom (NTC), the government-owned operator, and Ncell, the larger private operator. Nationally, the pattern that shows up again and again across Nepal's trekking regions — Everest, Annapurna, Manaslu — is that Ncell tends to be faster in cities and lower valleys, while NTC tends to hold a signal further into the mountains, even if that signal is slower 2G or 3G rather than fast 4G.
That national pattern is a reasonable starting assumption for Kanchenjunga, but it isn't the same thing as verified, trail-specific data for every settlement on this particular route, and we want to be upfront about that distinction rather than presenting a national trend as a guaranteed local fact.
What we can point to directly is a significant, dated development for this exact trek: in May 2026, Nepal Telecom switched on a new 4G tower in Ghunsa itself, at 3,850 m, replacing what had previously been a slower 2G VSAT connection. NTC's own announcement states that the upgrade is intended to extend usable communication access into Khambachen and Lhonak as well, since those settlements sit further up the same valley. That's a genuine, recent improvement to the connectivity picture on this circuit — but it's also brand new at the time of writing, and we haven't yet seen enough on-the-ground trekker reports from Khambachen and Lhonak specifically to say how far the practical benefit actually reaches beyond Ghunsa itself. Treat "better signal expanding up-valley" as the direction of travel, not yet as a confirmed village-by-village fact for Khambachen and Lhonak.
Ncell's specific coverage in Taplejung district and along the Tamor and Ghunsa valleys is less documented in available current sources. Based on the broader national pattern, it's reasonable to expect Ncell to perform well in Taplejung town and the lower jeep-accessible villages, and to fade faster than NTC once you're on foot and gaining altitude — but we'd rather say that plainly than invent a coverage map we can't back up.
There isn't an unqualified winner here, and any guide that hands you one without caveats is oversimplifying.

Many experienced trekkers in Nepal simply carry both SIMs — the cost of a second SIM card is trivial next to the rest of a 17-day trip, and it removes the gamble of guessing which network happens to reach a particular teahouse. If you're only buying one, the pattern across Nepal's remote treks favours NTC for reach, at the cost of some speed.
Buy your SIM (or eSIM, where your phone and the operator support it) in Kathmandu before you fly to Bhadrapur — you'll need your passport for registration either way, and options thin out fast once you're in Taplejung and gone entirely once you're on the trail.
Wherever a signal exists, mobile data generally follows the same hierarchy: text messaging and basic app notifications are the most resilient, email and light browsing usually work on a workable connection, and anything heavier — video calls, streaming, large uploads — becomes unreliable fast, even in villages that technically show a bar or two of signal.
Don't plan around video calls anywhere above Ghunsa. Don't plan around uploading photo galleries or large files at all on this trek unless you happen to be in Ghunsa with a working Wi-Fi connection and some patience. Text and small image messages, sent opportunistically whenever a connection appears, is the realistic pattern most trekkers settle into on a route this remote.
Lodge Wi-Fi exists in pockets rather than as a route-wide system. Ghunsa is the clearest example — our own current itinerary notes solar charging and satellite Wi-Fi at some lodges there, making it the best-equipped village on the entire circuit for staying in touch. Elsewhere, Wi-Fi is inconsistent: some teahouses in the lower valley may offer it, higher and more remote lodges generally don't, and where it exists it's normal for it to be noticeably slower than what you'd find in Kathmandu or even on the busier Everest and Annapurna routes.
We're not going to publish a fixed Wi-Fi fee for this route, because we don't have current, verified per-lodge pricing for Kanchenjunga specifically, and inventing a number would be worse than being honest about the gap. What we can tell you, based on how remote-area Wi-Fi is typically priced elsewhere in Nepal, is to expect a small per-use or per-hour charge, payable in cash, and to expect the price to rise the higher and more remote the lodge.
Don't plan a Kanchenjunga trek around reliable remote work. This isn't a judgement on the trek — it's a logistics reality. Between signal gaps, unpredictable Wi-Fi, limited charging, long walking days, and difficult weather-driven contingencies, there's no version of this itinerary where you can promise a client or a colleague an uninterrupted connection for meetings or uploads.
Basic communication — a message here, an email there, whenever the trail happens to pass through Ghunsa or a lower village with signal — is realistic. Anything that requires scheduled, guaranteed connectivity is not, and we'd rather tell you that before you book than have you find out on Day 8 at Lhonak.
Your personal mobile signal is not the same thing as your emergency communication plan on this route, and it's important not to conflate the two. Above Ghunsa in particular, there will be stretches where your own phone has nothing at all, regardless of which SIM you're carrying.
This is one of the central reasons a licensed guide is legally required on Kanchenjunga's restricted sections in the first place. Guides on remote routes like this typically carry their own communication arrangements and established contacts with their agency and with rescue coordinators, and they are trained to manage evacuation logistics if something goes wrong — this is a meaningfully different resource from a trekker's personal phone signal, and it's a large part of why the mandatory-guide rule exists on restricted routes.
We don't publish emergency phone numbers in a general guide like this one, since the right number depends on your specific situation, location, and insurer, and numbers change. What we do at Places Nepal is confirm every trekker's insurance policy — specifically that it covers trekking to altitude with helicopter evacuation — at the pre-trek briefing in Thamel, precisely because Kanchenjunga's upper circuit has no roads, no hospitals, and no quick way out other than a long-range helicopter flight. Insurance and a licensed guide, not phone signal, are the actual safety net on this route.
Electricity availability and free charging are two different things, and it's worth separating them clearly. Villages along the route, especially Ghunsa, do have solar-powered electricity — but supply is intermittent, dependent on sunlight and battery storage, and it is completely normal for teahouses to charge a small fee for device charging even where power exists.
Carry a fully charged power bank from Kathmandu and treat it as your primary charging source, not a backup. Don't assume you'll find an outlet exactly when your battery runs low — plan to top up opportunistically whenever charging is offered, rather than waiting until you need it.
Based on our current 17-day itinerary, here's how charging, power, and connectivity generally track together by section of the route. Treat this as a representative pattern rather than a lodge-by-lodge guarantee — infrastructure on a route this remote can change from one season to the next, and not every teahouse in a "good" zone will have exactly the same setup.

As lodges become more remote, charging becomes less predictable for practical reasons rather than anything to do with altitude itself: smaller solar setups, fewer sockets shared among more trekkers, shorter generator or panel operating hours, and the simple fact that a village like Lhonak has to run on far less infrastructure than Ghunsa. Expect queues for sockets at the busiest lodges, and expect charging windows to shrink the higher you go — not because altitude damages the process, but because the underlying power supply is smaller to begin with.
Cold temperatures — not altitude on its own — are what affect phone battery performance on this trek, and nights at Lhonak and Sele Le get seriously cold. Keep your phone inside an inner jacket pocket rather than an outer pocket or your pack overnight, store your power bank somewhere it won't sit in freezing temperatures for hours, and use airplane mode when you're not actively expecting a signal — a phone hunting constantly for a network it can't find will drain far faster than one that's simply switched to flight mode. Downloading maps, messages, and anything else you might need before you leave a connected village is worth more than any battery-saving trick once you're on the trail.
Yes — this is one of the more straightforward recommendations in this guide, and it's already on our standard equipment list for the trek. Even with charging available at a number of lodges, a power bank is your buffer against fee-per-charge lodges, shared sockets, intermittent solar supply, and the simple fact that Lhonak and the high camps offer very little charging at all. Bring your charging cable and consider a spare, since replacing a lost or broken one anywhere past Taplejung isn't realistic.
We won't prescribe one universal capacity for every trekker, since it depends on your phone, your camera use, and how many devices you're carrying — but for a 17-day remote trek with limited charging above Ghunsa, err toward a larger capacity power bank rather than a small one, and protect it from prolonged cold the same way you would your phone.
Not automatically. A solar charger makes sense if you're on a longer or more customised itinerary, carrying heavy camera or drone equipment, travelling with multiple devices, or simply uneasy about relying on lodge charging at all. It makes less sense as a default add-on, because it adds weight, depends entirely on sun exposure, charges slowly compared to a wall outlet, and does very little for you on an overcast day — which, given this region's wetter, greener climate compared to central Nepal, isn't a rare occurrence.
For most trekkers on our standard itinerary, a solid power bank combined with opportunistic lodge charging is simpler and lighter than adding a solar panel to your pack. If you know your trip will be unusually photo- or device-heavy, a compact solar charger is a reasonable extra, not a required one.
Mirrorless and DSLR batteries, GoPros, and drone batteries all draw down far faster than a phone, and none of them benefit from the same trickle-charging patience a smartphone can tolerate. If you're carrying serious camera gear, bring spare, fully charged batteries from Kathmandu rather than counting on recharging them mid-trek — the same limited, fee-based charging that applies to phones applies to camera batteries, and larger batteries simply take longer in a system that's often solar-dependent and shared among several trekkers.
If you're considering flying a drone on this trek, that's a separate legal question from connectivity, and the rules matter here given Kanchenjunga's restricted-area and conservation-area status. Reaching a base camp doesn't automatically mean reaching a signal, and it's worth treating Pangpema and Oktang separately.
Pangpema (North Base Camp, 5,143 m) is a single long day out and back from Lhonak, itself one of the most remote inhabited points in Nepal. Based on our itinerary and the general pattern for this stretch of the route, don't plan on any mobile signal at Pangpema. Whether the 2026 Ghunsa 4G upgrade eventually extends any usable signal this far up the valley isn't something we can confirm yet — it's a long way from the new tower, through difficult terrain, and we haven't seen verified trekker reports either way.
Oktang (South Base Camp viewpoint, 4,730 m), reached from Tseram via Ramche, sits on the equally remote southern side of the massif, on a high traverse with no permanent settlements and no infrastructure of any kind. Treat this stretch the same way: no reliable signal, no Wi-Fi, and charging limited to whatever basic lodge facilities exist at Tseram and Sele Le before and after.
The honest, useful planning assumption for both base camps: don't plan on reliable connectivity at the highest and most remote sections of this trek. If a bar of signal briefly appears on a ridge somewhere near either base camp, treat it as a pleasant surprise, not something to build a plan around.
Nothing goes wrong simply because you're offline — but it's worth preparing properly before you lose signal rather than scrambling once you have. Before you leave a connected point (ideally Kathmandu, and again in Ghunsa):
This kind of preparation matters more on Kanchenjunga than it does on almost any other planning decision for the trip, simply because there's no fallback infrastructure to lean on if you arrive at Lhonak without having sorted it out in Kathmandu.
A short "do this before Day 1" checklist, worth doing the evening of your pre-trek briefing:
Offline preparation does more for your trip than any amount of hoping for connectivity once you're on the trail.
This depends entirely on how you use your phone. A trekker sending occasional WhatsApp messages, checking email, and doing light browsing whenever signal appears will use very little data across 17 days. Someone hoping to upload photos, join calls, or otherwise use data heavily will find that ambition limited far more by where signal exists than by how much data they've bought — there's no data package that fixes a lack of coverage above Ghunsa.
We're not going to recommend a specific GB package here, since current NTC and Ncell tourist data plans change and vary by promotion; check current pricing when you buy your SIM in Kathmandu, and buy a package sized for realistic use in the connected sections of the trek rather than the whole 17 days.
Keep these three costs separate when budgeting, since they behave differently:
SIM and data cost is a Kathmandu expense, paid once when you buy your SIM and top-ups, in Nepali rupees or by card depending on where you buy it.
Wi-Fi cost, where it exists on the trail — chiefly in Ghunsa — is a small per-use or per-session fee, paid in cash at the lodge, and we don't have a verified current figure specific to this route to quote you.
Charging cost is likewise a small per-device fee at most teahouses above the lower valley, again cash-only.
Places Nepal's own trip notes are direct about this: there are no reliable ATMs anywhere on this itinerary after Kathmandu, and all personal extras — charging, hot showers, drinks, snacks, and Wi-Fi included — are cash-only in Nepali rupees for the full 17 days. Budgeting roughly NPR 2,000–2,500 per day for these kinds of personal extras, withdrawn in Kathmandu before you fly to Bhadrapur, is a sensible working figure for the whole trip, not just connectivity.
Putting the whole circuit together, using our actual itinerary as the reference:
Lower approach (Taplejung to Gyabla, Days 1–4). The most connected stretch of the trek. Mobile signal is generally workable, and electricity for charging is normal in village guesthouses.
Ghunsa, twice (Days 5 and 10). The circuit's connectivity anchor in both directions. Solar power, satellite Wi-Fi at some lodges, and — since 2026 — a dedicated NTC 4G tower.
The high northern loop — Khambachen, Lhonak, Pangpema (Days 6–9). The trek's most remote stretch. Expect little to no signal, minimal charging, and no Wi-Fi.
The Sele La crossing and southern base camp — Sele Le, Tseram, Oktang, Ramche (Days 11–13). Equally remote on the southern side of the massif; basic lodges, no meaningful connectivity.
Descent — Tortong, Yamphudin (Days 14–15). Connectivity gradually returns as you move back into larger, lower villages.
Return to civilisation — Kanyam, Bhadrapur (Days 16–17). Full mobile coverage and normal Wi-Fi resume.
Wherever a workable connection exists, text-based messaging apps and email are the most resilient options — they need far less bandwidth than calls or media, and they're what actually gets through on a marginal connection. Don't count on voice or video calls outside Ghunsa and the lower valley, and treat any successful call higher up the route as a bonus rather than something to plan around.
Set expectations before you leave, not on the trail. Agree with family that you'll be in touch whenever signal allows rather than promising daily calls, and be upfront that the route is remote — this removes the anxiety of an unexplained gap turning into a source of worry on either end. If something does need urgent handling, your guide's communication channels with the agency are the more reliable route in a genuine emergency, not your personal phone signal.
Groups shouldn't rely on a single phone or a single SIM. A simple, workable approach: carry at least two active devices across the group, share important contacts and documents between them before you start, bring a shared charging backup rather than one power bank per person, use low-power modes when you're not actively checking messages, and make sure everyone has the same offline maps and route information downloaded. It doesn't need to be more complicated than that.
Kanchenjunga is generally more remote and less predictable for connectivity than Nepal's two most-trekked corridors. The Everest region has Everest Link, a dedicated commercial Wi-Fi network built specifically for trekkers and extended most of the way to Base Camp; the Annapurna Circuit has widespread lodge Wi-Fi through Manang and reasonable mobile coverage in the lower and middle sections. Neither of those dedicated systems exists on Kanchenjunga. This isn't a criticism of the route — it's a direct consequence of far lower trekker numbers and a much newer teahouse infrastructure that, in places, has only existed for a handful of years. If staying connected matters more to your trip than genuine solitude, Everest or Annapurna will serve you better; if the opposite is true, Kanchenjunga's disconnection is part of what makes it what it is.
You should expect some connected days and some offline days on this trek, and that's entirely normal for a route this remote — not a logistical failure on anyone's part. A connectivity gap between Ghunsa and your return to Ghunsa five days later isn't a problem to solve; it's simply what this particular circuit is. We'd rather you know that clearly before you go than discover it, unprepared, at Lhonak.
Every Places Nepal Kanchenjunga departure includes a government-licensed, English-speaking trekking guide for all 17 days, and our pre-trek briefing in Thamel specifically covers remoteness protocol — evacuation procedures, the communication plan for the trip, and verification of your travel insurance. Our guides carry their own arrangements for communicating with the agency and coordinating emergency support; this is a separate and more reliable resource than any individual trekker's phone signal on the upper circuit.
