This kind of variance is common for viewpoints and base camps specifically, since the exact reference point (the formal viewpoint marker versus a slightly higher or lower spot trekkers commonly reach) can differ between sources, and GPS readings at remote, glacier-adjacent locations carry their own margin of error. We're using our own current itinerary's figure as primary since it reflects where our specific route actually takes you, while flagging the variance rather than presenting false precision.
The route's altitude progression, in order: lower hills and forested valleys → Ghunsa (the main acclimatisation hub) → Khambachen → Lhonak → Pangpema / North Base Camp → descent back through Ghunsa → the high-pass traverse → Tseram → Ramche → Oktang / South Base Camp approach → descent back to Bhadrapur.

Tseram (3,870 m) serves as the base for the South Base Camp push, reached after the high-pass traverse from the northern side of the circuit.

Crossing three passes in one day is demanding for reasons beyond raw altitude: cumulative fatigue from sustained climbing and descending, genuinely steep sections between passes, real weather exposure at this elevation, and the sheer length of the day — this is commonly the longest single trekking day on the entire circuit. Why acclimatisation doesn't guarantee prevention of AMS: individual physiological response to altitude varies significantly and isn't reliably predicted by fitness, age, or prior experience. Acetazolamide (commonly known by the brand name Diamox) is sometimes used to help with altitude acclimatisation, either preventatively or once mild symptoms appear. We won't provide dosing information here — this is a decision to make with a qualified healthcare professional before you travel, based on your own medical history. Two points worth understanding regardless of what you decide: medication does not replace genuine acclimatisation, and it does not make a rapid, poorly-paced ascent safe. Treat it as one possible part of a prevention strategy, not a substitute for the itinerary's built-in pacing.
Drink regularly throughout each day — dehydration compounds altitude symptoms and can make them harder to distinguish from AMS itself. That said, don't force excessive water intake beyond genuine thirst and need; more isn't automatically better. Warm fluids can be genuinely comforting and useful at altitude. Alcohol is best avoided entirely at these elevations, given its dehydrating effect and how it can mask early symptoms at exactly the wrong time.
Disturbed sleep is common at altitude — cold, dry air, and periodic breathing (a normal pattern where breathing rhythm changes during sleep at altitude) can all affect sleep quality without indicating a genuine problem on their own. Snacking between meals helps maintain adequate calorie intake when a full meal feels like more than you want. Food doesn't prevent altitude sickness, but genuinely inadequate nutrition compounds fatigue and makes the whole trek harder than it needs to be.
High altitude and weather compound each other. Cold, wind, snow, and cloud all become more consequential the higher you climb — a high-pass day that would be merely cold at 2,000 m becomes genuinely serious at 4,600 m with poor visibility and wind chill added on top of the altitude itself. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most stable conditions across the route's high points.

You should be able to sustain genuine endurance across consecutive days, not just handle a single hard effort: real leg strength for both uphill and downhill walking, the ability to carry a daypack throughout each day, and enough cardiovascular base to keep functioning reasonably well as oxygen availability drops. EBC reaches a higher single point and a higher sleeping altitude than Kanchenjunga — a real, measurable difference. But this doesn't automatically make EBC's altitude "harder" in every sense: Kanchenjunga's altitude exposure is sustained across a longer stretch of the route, and its remoteness means less infrastructure to fall back on if something goes wrong at altitude.
