Roughly 100 km, the Upper Mustang Monsoon Trek offers moderate daily walks through arid, scenic landscapes—no extreme altitudes, just pure cultural immersion.
When most people think of trekking in Nepal during the monsoon, they picture muddy trails, leech-infested forests, and heavy rain clouds blotting out the mountain views. But there’s a secret escape in the Himalayas—Upper Mustang—a region untouched by the monsoon's fury due to its unique rain shadow location.
Tucked behind the towering Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, Upper Mustang offers a dry and mystical trekking experience even in peak monsoon months (June to September).
Upper Mustang lies north of the main Himalayan range, in a region that receives minimal rainfall due to the natural barrier created by the mountains. While most of Nepal is drenched, Mustang stays arid and trekker-friendly.
Unlike the bustling trails of Everest and Annapurna during peak seasons, Upper Mustang remains peaceful in monsoon. You’ll often have entire trails and teahouses to yourself—perfect for cultural immersion and mindfulness.
Oddly enough, monsoon can offer the clearest skies here. The rain washes away the dust, enhancing the earthy red cliffs, ochre canyons, and dramatic rock formations. It’s a photographer’s paradise.
Until 1992, Upper Mustang was a restricted demilitarized zone, and even today, it retains a strong sense of cultural and political isolation. The walled city of Lo Manthang, once the capital of the Mustang Kingdom, still stands with whitewashed homes, royal palaces, and labyrinthine alleys.
Upper Mustang is home to deeply spiritual Tibetan Buddhist communities. Centuries-old monasteries like Thubchen and Jampa Lhakhang, as well as mysterious sky caves carved high into cliffs—believed to be meditation chambers and burial sites—add to its sacred aura.
The people of Upper Mustang, known as Lobas, share a close cultural affinity with Tibetans. They speak a dialect called Loke (a Tibetan offshoot), wear traditional woolen garments, and follow agrarian and trade-based livelihoods. Hospitality is deeply rooted in their way of life.
Our guided standard Upper Mustang trek takes 14 days, beginning from Jomsom, after a scenic flight from Pokhara.
Popular Trek Route:
Day 1–2: Kathmandu - Pokhara – Jomsom – Kagbeni (Gateway to Upper Mustang)
Day 3–6: Trek through Chaile, Syangboche, Ghami, and Dhakmar—villages known for red cliffs, ancient chortens, and monastery murals.
Day 7–9: Reach Lo Manthang, explore the royal palace, monasteries, and side trip to Chhoser Cave.
Day 10–13: Return via a different route through Yara, Tangge, or Dhi for varied landscapes and lesser-known trails.
Optional: A jeep-assisted itinerary is available for those short on time or preferring less walking.
If your timing aligns, witness the Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang—a vibrant, three-day Buddhist celebration that reenacts the victory of good over evil through masked dances and chants. Even during early monsoon, this spiritual event draws monks, pilgrims, and few lucky travelers.
Taste Tsampa (roasted barley flour), Thukpa (noodle soup), and Yak butter tea—simple yet nourishing local foods. The monsoon harvests bring fresh barley, wild herbs, and fruits to the region.
Despite its remoteness, Upper Mustang offers comfortable teahouses and eco-lodges. Many are run by local families, ensuring warm hospitality. Solar-heated showers and Wi-Fi (in limited areas) are increasingly common.
Upper Mustang is a restricted area and requires:
Restricted Area Permit (RAP): USD 500 for the first 10 days, USD 50 per extra day
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): NPR 3,000
These can be arranged easily through registered trekking agencies like Places Nepal Treks, ensuring smooth logistics and expert local guidance.
Upper Mustang is a moderate trek, suitable for hikers with decent fitness levels. There are no extreme altitudes (highest point around 4,200m), and rest days are well spaced.

Photographers chasing dramatic landscapes
