Tips for Beginners Trekking the Annapurna Base Camp

Mental Preparation is Key

As a beginner, you probably have no idea what you are going to have to overcome as you take this trek. That is why it is prudent to prepare mentally for what’s ahead.

The best way to do this is to read articles and view images of the area. This will help you gain some knowledge about the terrain you are going to hike. You’ll be able to picture the stone paths, suspended bridges, rocky paths, and muddy areas.

You’ll also have an image of the landscape. You can find helpful material online and in books. You can also talk to people who have taken the journey just so you get firsthand information about what to expect.

Physical Preparation is a Must

Trekking is a physically demanding exercise which is why you should be in good shape before you finally decide to embark on this journey. Luckily, there are many exercises you can engage in to get into shape.

Riding a bicycle and going swimming regularly are some of the activities you can get into a few months or weeks before you make the journey. Be sure to also take short hikes to high altitude areas as this will help your body start adjusting to conditions that exist at higher grounds.

Jogging and walking every evening or morning are also some of the exercises that can help you get into good shape for the ABC trek. Along with exercises, you need to be watchful regarding your diet.

You don't want to fill up on junk food as the days get closer. Instead, choose meals that are known to add nutritional value. Keep in mind that mental and physical preparation go hand in hand so you should consider doing both at the same time.

Make Early Travel Arrangements

Regardless of the part of the world you are coming from, it is always a good idea to have a plan in place a few weeks or months before traveling.

Getting in touch with a reputable travel company will ensure that you have a more enjoyable experience. Such a company is likely to handle things like itinerary arrangements, accommodation, and insurance in case you lose luggage or fall sick along the way.

Working with such a company takes some weight off of your shoulders and makes it easier for you to focus on the trek ahead.

Choose Your Itinerary Carefully

Tourists often have the freedom to choose the trekking itinerary they wish to stick to. In most cases, you can choose the 7, 10, or 14-day travel itinerary. Some travel companies offer customized trekking itineraries which make it possible for you to make adjustments to suit your specific needs.

As a beginner, you do not want to pick itineraries that require you to complete the trek within a week or ten days. Instead, go for itineraries that allow you more time.

The 14-day itinerary is the most suitable because it allows you to take your time on the trail. You will have ample time to rest, replenish your calories, and even acclimatize. If you choose itineraries with a few days, you will end up struggling because of the demanding nature of the trek.

Not only will you be trekking for a few hours but will have to complete more kilometers in a day and that may end up taking a toll on you both mentally and physically. The Annapurna Base Camp trek is about 67 kilometers (41.63 miles) long so you will need at least 12 days to cover about 5 (3.2 miles) daily.

On the trail, you will find areas that require you to climb, others will be flat while others are going to require you to descend. Some paths are quite smooth while others are rocky, slippery, or muddy.

If you consider all these things, you will understand why it is wiser to choose the itinerary that affords you more days to complete the trek.

Consider the Season

As noted before, the Annapurna Base Camp can be a challenge for first-time trekkers which is why you should pick the appropriate season to do it. Spring is one of the best seasons for you to make the trip.

It starts in March and comes to an end in May. At this time, the temperature can range from 16 to 22 degrees Celsius or 61 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. The nights can get a lot colder as temperatures can drop to 2 to 4 degrees Celcius or 27 to 29 degrees Fahrenheit.

During spring, the sky is mostly clear allowing you to enjoy epic views of the mountain peaks and the vast greenery. You also get to enjoy calm lake views which make for the perfect photo backgrounds.

In certain instances, you may experience light rainfall which is why you should consider bringing a raincoat along. At this time, the Rhododendron blooms which is why you can expect the paths to be covered in beautiful flowers.

This is also the best season to go if you want to get a good look at some of the wildlife species in the region. The autumn is another good season for you to go trekking the Annapurna Base Camp.

The season begins in September and ends in November. It is characterized by chilly nights and war days. Temperatures can range from 16 to 22 degrees Celcius or 54 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit during the day.

A lot of people go trekking during this season so you should expect to find other tourists on different paths. This makes it easy to meet new people from around the world.

The winter season is the least popular because of how cold the temperatures can get. The season begins in December and runs through to February.

During winter, a lot of paths will be covered in snow. You will need to dress and pack appropriately for cold temperatures. Generally, winter months are the least recommended for beginners.

Summer or Monsoon season is another bad time to go if you are a beginner. At this time, temperatures can get extremely high making it even more difficult for you to trek.

The season begins in June and ends in mid-September.

Pack Appropriately

The next thing to keep in mind is that the way you pack can have a huge impact on your experience. You don’t need to pack many clothes and snacks for Annapurna Base Camp Trek. The accommodations provide nutritional meals and you buy array of snacks all along the trail.

Pack too heavily and a trek with moderate difficulty will seem insurmountable. On the other hand, if you pack too lightly, you may end up needing more supplies on the way and that may force you to spend money along the way. Talk to your travel company or guide to know exactly what supplies you should prioritize.

The things you pack will depend on the number of days you wish to take on the trek and the season you choose. In case you have heavy luggage, consider hiring the services of a porter who can assist in carrying some of your items for a fee.

Summing Up

The Annapurna Base Camp trek can be undertaken by any beginner as long as they are at a good fitness level. Planning and choosing the right season is key to enjoying the experience.

It is worth noting that most paths are clearly marked and often have other trekkers which means chances of getting lost are minimized. The destination is not too high and that also decreases the chances of experiencing things like severe altitude sickness.
