Foods in the Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek

All trek meals are included and designed to provide balanced nutrition essential for high-altitude trekking. Our professional cooks serve fresh, wholesome food prepared in teahouses and tented camps.

In Kathmandu:

Your hotel stay includes a daily buffet breakfast featuring energizing selections like eggs, toast, porridge, pancakes, cereals, fresh fruits, yogurt, tea, coffee, and juice. Lunch and dinner are excluded, allowing you to explore the rich dining options in Thamel, ranging from Western cuisine to authentic Nepali and Asian specialties.

In Nepalgunj and Teahouse Meals:

During your overnight stay in Nepalgunj, all meals are provided. Guests enjoy local favorites such as dal bhat (lentils, rice, and vegetables), chicken or vegetable curries, fried rice, chapatis, Indian snacks, and Tibetan momos. As you journey through remote villages including Dunai, Saldang, and Ringmo, local teahouses offer nourishing, freshly cooked meals using local ingredients. Typical dishes include thukpa, Tibetan bread, seasonal vegetables, and a variety of rice dishes, helping to replenish your energy reserves.

Camping Cuisine:

In the most isolated sections, our expedition team prepares nutritious meals at camp. Menus usually feature garlic soup (beneficial for altitude acclimatization), rice, pasta, lentils, potatoes, eggs, and hot beverages like tea or hot chocolate. Special dietary needs such as vegetarian or gluten-free can be accommodated if informed in advance.

Hydration and Safe Drinking Water:

Clean, safe drinking water is provided daily through boiled or filtered sources. Trekkers are encouraged to carry reusable water bottles, and water purification tablets are recommended to ensure hydration while minimizing environmental impact.

In the warm lowland town of Nepalgunj, accommodations consist of air-conditioned rooms with private or shared bathrooms. Hotel restaurants offer familiar dishes, and while Wi-Fi connectivity may be limited, it provides a comfortable rest before entering the mountains.

Tented Camps in Remote Areas:

In remote, high-altitude regions, we establish fully supported camps with sturdy four-season tents, thick sleeping mats, and foam mattresses. Dining and toilet tents are also provided, with fresh meals prepared daily by our expert kitchen staff.

Additional services like hot showers and device charging may be available at a nominal cost where facilities exist. Places Nepal manages all logistics to deliver a safe, enjoyable, and authentic Himalayan adventure that blends comfort, culture, and natural beauty.

The Upper Dolpo Camping Trek is rated as challenging due to its demanding nature and remote Himalayan terrain. Although it does not involve technical mountaineering, the trek includes multiple high-altitude passes above 5,000 meters, extended days of walking, and long durations without access to urban infrastructure.

This trek requires excellent physical fitness, stamina, and mental determination. Trekkers must be prepared for steep ascents and descents, unpredictable weather conditions, and long stretches without modern amenities. The remoteness of the region means fewer rescue options, and limited communication, adding to the expedition-style nature of the journey.

Its off-the-beaten-path character and raw natural beauty make Upper Dolpo ideal for seasoned adventurers seeking solitude, challenge, and cultural immersion in one of Nepal’s most isolated and mystical regions.

Weather & Best Season to Upper Dolpo CIrcuit Trek

The weather in Upper Dolpo is shaped by its high-altitude desert terrain and location in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. This creates a dry, barren environment that experiences dramatic seasonal shifts.

Spring (April to June) is one of the best seasons to trek in Upper Dolpo. The weather is relatively stable with warmer daytime temperatures and clear skies, making it ideal for crossing high passes like Nangdala La and Sela La. Wildflowers begin to bloom in the lower elevations, adding vibrant colors to the arid landscape.

Monsoon (July to early September) brings rainfall to much of Nepal, but Upper Dolpo lies in a rain shadow region. While the area receives less precipitation, trails can still be muddy and river crossings may be more difficult. Leeches are generally not a concern due to the dry terrain.

Autumn (September to early November) is another excellent season. Post-monsoon skies are crystal clear, offering the best mountain views and a comfortable trekking climate. Temperatures remain moderate, and the risk of weather-related disruptions is low, making this the peak trekking season.

Winter (November to March) brings extreme cold and heavy snow at higher elevations. Most passes, including Sangda La and Chhoila, become inaccessible. Lodges and villages at higher altitudes shut down, and trekking becomes dangerous and logistically difficult.

Weather Challenges: High altitude conditions bring unpredictable mountain weather. Sudden snowstorms, temperature drops, and strong winds can occur even in favorable months. Nights at high camps are extremely cold, and altitude sickness is a risk above 3,000 meters. Trekkers must be well-equipped with warm clothing, layered gear, and proper acclimatization days built into the itinerary.

Best Time to Go: The ideal windows for the Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek are late April to early June and early September to early November, when the weather is most stable, passes are open, and visibility is excellent. These periods offer the safest and most rewarding conditions for exploring Dolpo's raw Himalayan wilderness.

How to Get Fit for the Upper Dolpo Trek

The Upper Dolpo Camping Trek is a physically demanding journey that takes you through rugged Himalayan terrain, remote passes above 5,000 meters, and multi-day hiking with limited access to facilities. To fully enjoy the trek and minimize the risk of altitude-related problems or injury, it’s essential to prepare your body and mind ahead of time.

1. Cardiovascular Endurance

Build your aerobic stamina by doing regular cardio workouts at least 8–12 weeks before the trek. Aim for 4–5 sessions per week of activities like:

  • Brisk walking or jogging
  • Cycling or spinning
  • Swimming or rowing
  • Stair climbing or incline treadmill walking
  • Start with 30–45 minutes per session, gradually increasing both intensity and duration.

2. Train on Inclines and Uneven Terrain

The Upper Dolpo trail includes steep ascents, descents, and rocky paths. To prepare:

  • Hike on hills or trails with elevation gain
  • Practice walking on rough, uneven terrain
  • Use stairs with a loaded daypack to mimic the trek environment
  • Try to complete back-to-back long hikes on weekends to simulate actual trekking conditions.

3. Strength and Core Conditioning

Strong legs and core muscles improve your stability and reduce fatigue. Focus on:

  • Leg exercises: squats, lunges, calf raises, and step-ups
  • Core exercises: planks, crunches, and leg lifts
  • Include 2–3 strength sessions per week
  • Add a light pack (5–7 kg) as your body adapts.

4. Flexibility and Recovery

Include yoga or stretching to prevent muscle tightness and support recovery:

  • Dynamic stretches before workouts
  • Static stretches or yoga after workouts
  • Focus on hamstrings, calves, hip flexors, and lower back

5. Train with a Backpack

You’ll be carrying a daypack with water, snacks, and essentials during the trek. Start using your pack during training hikes to:

  • Strengthen your shoulders and back
  • Identify potential discomfort early
  • Improve balance and posture

6. Mental Preparation

Dolpo’s remoteness, limited amenities, and long days require mental resilience. Prepare by:

  • Trekking in remote or rustic areas near your home
  • Expecting discomfort such as cold weather, basic toilets, or isolation
  • Staying positive and flexible in the face of delays or changes

7. Acclimatization Awareness

Fitness helps, but altitude affects everyone differently. Include treks to moderate elevations (2,000–3,000m) if possible. Learn about:

  • Hydration and gradual ascent
  • Symptoms of altitude sickness (AMS, HAPE, HACE)
  • The importance of rest and acclimatization days (already included in your itinerary)

Final Tip:

Consult with your doctor or a travel medicine specialist before beginning a training program—especially if you have any pre-existing health conditions. With consistent training and proper planning, you’ll increase your endurance, confidence, and enjoyment on this unforgettable journey through Upper Dolpo.

The Upper Dolpo Camping Trek is a remote, high-altitude adventure through Nepal’s most isolated wilderness. Unlike teahouse treks, this journey requires camping for most nights, which means you’ll need to be well-prepared for cold nights, rugged terrain, and basic living conditions.

Trekking in Upper Dolpo requires specific permits due to its protected and restricted status. The essential permits include the Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit, the Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit, and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. These permits help regulate tourism, conserve the fragile environment, and ensure your safety throughout the trek.

All permits must be arranged prior to entering the region, and your trekking agency typically assists with this process. Valid passports and passport-sized photos are required. Compliance with permit regulations and local customs is crucial to preserve Dolpo’s pristine environment and cultural heritage.

What to Expect on this Trek

The Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek is an expedition-style journey through rugged wilderness, demanding both physical stamina and mental resilience. Expect long trekking days, camping in remote locations with basic facilities, and highly variable weather conditions. Nights can be cold, especially at high passes over 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), so warm gear and adaptability are essential.

You will visit isolated Tibetan villages where life follows centuries-old traditions, offering authentic cultural encounters. Meals are wholesome and mostly locally sourced, while accommodations range from camping tents to occasional teahouses. The trail provides solitude, pristine nature, and breathtaking Himalayan vistas, ideal for trekkers seeking a true adventure far from tourist crowds.

Flora and Fauna of this Region

Upper Dolpo’s unique geography creates a cold desert ecosystem in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. The lower valleys (around 2,100m / 6,900 ft) feature pine, juniper, and rhododendron forests, which gradually transition to alpine meadows and rocky highlands above 4,000 meters (13,120 feet). Spring brings colorful wildflowers and medicinal herbs, valued by local healers.

Wildlife is diverse yet elusive, including endangered species such as the snow leopard, Himalayan blue sheep (bharal), musk deer, and Himalayan tahr. Birdlife is rich, with lammergeiers (bearded vultures), Himalayan griffons, and various pheasants. The Shey Phoksundo National Park plays a critical role in protecting this biodiversity, offering nature lovers a remarkable opportunity to witness rare species in their natural habitat.
