Key Information

05:30 AM → Transfer to Tribhuwan International Airport

As the whole trip will conclude in under 5 hours and we need to get to Everest before the midday wind blows clouds, blocking the view, we have to start early. A representative from Places Nepal will pick you up at your hotel and take you to the helicopter check-in point, where you will complete some paperwork and get to the helicopter hanger.

Please bring your original passport. In about an hour, we will get on the helicopter and leave for Lukla at 6:30 a.m.

06:30 am → Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla

The helicopter flight from Lukla will take about 45 minutes and give us a chance to explore the eastern hilly side of Nepal. The scenic helicopter ride will take us to the Khumbu region, where we will stop for a short break, as the helicopter may require refueling.

7:45 am → Towards Khumbu and Everest Base Camp

Following our short refueling break, we’ll once again get on the chopper, and this time for the ultimate ride. As we take off into the sky, we'll be greeted by an awe-inspiring view of the Khumbu region.

As you fly towards Everest Base Camp, the landscape undergoes a mesmerizing transformation. The gleaming Dudh-Kosi River, a testament to the glacial origins of the Himalayas, winds its way through the valleys beneath you, its milky waters creating a captivating sight. The presence of terraced fields, revered monasteries, and isolated Sherpa villages adds richness to the journey, while the towering peaks of the Himalayas beckon in the distance, enticing you with their grandeur.

8:15 am → Flyover at Basecamp & Kalapathar

As we draw closer to the flyover zone, the helicopter gracefully arcs over the iconic Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar, immersing us in an awe-inspiring world. We will be hovering at an impressive altitude of 5,250 meters (17,225 feet), allowing us to marvel at the vastness of the Himalayas unfurling beneath us. The Base Camp and the prominence of Kala Patthar provide unparalleled vistas of the Everest massif. Take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime experience by capturing photos and videos that will serve as cherished mementos of this breathtaking moment.

08:30 am → Flight to Syangboche Hill and walk up to Hotel Everest View

As our memories are etched with the grandeur of the Himalayas, the journey continues to Syangboche Hill (3,880m). Syangboche provides a peaceful sanctuary after the thrilling flight over Everest Base Camp. The iconic Mt. Everest View Hotel stands ready to welcome us. Upon landing, we can savor a delicious breakfast while taking in the majestic Everest massif.09:30 AM: Return Flight to Kathmandu with a Potential Lukla Stop

Our journey descends back to Kathmandu as the landscape undergoes a swift transformation, evolving from the icy grandeur of the mountains to the lush green valleys and terraced farmlands of the lower regions. We may need to make a brief stop in Lukla for refueling. This short pit stop is a nice opportunity to explore Lukla, the gateway to Mount Everest.

As the journey culminates in Kathmandu, passengers disembark, carrying not just cherished memories but captivating stories of a realm all experienced within the span of a few extraordinary hours.

11:00 AM → Arrival at Kathmandu Domestic Airport & Drive to Hotel

By now, we will have landed in Kathmandu with memories for a lifetime. We will check out of the airport, and a Places Nepal representative will drive you back to your hotel, congratulating you on a successful journey.

Meals

Breakfast

To join the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour, you’ll first need to get to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, which is accessible via international flights. From Kathmandu, the tour usually starts early in the morning from Tribhuvan International Airport’s domestic terminal. Most operators provide hotel pickup and transfer to the airport. The helicopter then flies toward the Everest region with stops for refueling and sightseeing, including a brief landing at Kalapatthar or near Everest Base Camp. The full round trip takes about 4–5 hours, returning you to Kathmandu the same day.

Since the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour is a one-day trip, there’s no need for overnight accommodation. However, many tour packages include a breakfast stop at Hotel Everest View, one of the world’s highest-altitude hotels. There, you can enjoy a light meal or hot drink with stunning mountain views. Before and after the tour, your accommodation and meals will be in Kathmandu, where there’s a wide range of hotels and restaurants to suit all budgets and preferences. If breakfast at Everest View is not included in your package, it can usually be arranged for an extra cost.

This trip is rated easy

Unlike the traditional trek to Everest Base Camp, which takes several days of walking through high-altitude terrain, this helicopter tour significantly reduces the physical demands while still offering breathtaking views and a close-up experience of the Himalayas.

Physical Requirements

Participants are not required to be highly fit or experienced in trekking. The tour involves minimal walking—usually just a short break at Kalapatthar or another viewpoint to take photos and enjoy the panoramic views of Mount Everest and the surrounding peaks. This makes it accessible to travelers of all ages, including families with children and older adults, as long as they are generally in good health.

Altitude Considerations

The main challenge comes from the altitude. The helicopter lands at high elevations, often above 5,000 meters, which means there is a risk of altitude-related symptoms such as shortness of breath or lightheadedness. However, since the stop at high altitude is brief (usually under 15-20 minutes), the risk of serious altitude sickness is low.

Overall Rating

  • Technical Difficulty: Very low

  • Physical Fitness Required: Basic

  • Altitude Risk: Moderate (but manageable with brief stops and precautions)

In summary, the 1-day Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour is a low-effort, high-reward experience, ideal for those who want to witness the grandeur of Everest without undertaking a strenuous multi-day trek.

The best time for the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour is during spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). These seasons offer clear skies, stable weather, and excellent mountain views—ideal for safe flights and stunning aerial photography.

Morning hours are perfect for flying, as wind and cloud cover are usually minimal early in the day. While winter (December–February) can also provide clear skies, temperatures are much colder. The monsoon season (June–August) is the least favorable, with frequent clouds and rain disrupting flight schedules.

To prepare for the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour, focus on building basic fitness through light cardio like walking or jogging to improve your breathing and stamina. Since the tour reaches high altitude, staying well-hydrated, eating clean, and getting enough sleep in the days before the flight can help your body adjust better. Practicing deep breathing or simple yoga can also support oxygen intake. While no intense training is needed, being in good overall health will make the experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

For the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour, wear layered clothing to handle changing temperatures—mornings can be cold at high altitudes, while it may warm up at lower stops. A thermal base layer, fleece or down jacket, windproof outer shell, and comfortable trekking pants are ideal. Wear warm gloves, a hat or beanie, and UV-protective sunglasses to guard against the intense mountain sun. Bring sunscreen, lip balm, a refillable water bottle, and a small daypack for your essentials. Also, wear sturdy shoes or sneakers—you won’t trek far, but grip and warmth matter.
