Is TIMS required for the Manaslu Circuit in 2026? Compare the latest Nepal Tourism Board and TAAN guidance, understand the Restricted Area Permit and learn how Places Nepal handles current permit requirements.
If you've searched whether TIMS is required for the Manaslu Circuit in 2026, you've probably found two different answers.
The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) TIMS page currently lists the Manaslu Circuit among the routes requiring an agency-issued TIMS card. TAAN's TIMS information says visitors to controlled areas who hold Department of Immigration permits do not need one.
That's why a plain "yes" or "no" without sources would be misleading. Here is where we stand: TIMS is no longer being enforced on the Manaslu trail. If the rules change, Places Nepal will arrange any required permit for you at no extra charge.
The rest of this article explains how we got to that answer, so you can judge it yourself.
TIMS stands for Trekkers' Information Management System. It is a registration system for trekkers in Nepal, used for route information, tracking which trekkers are on which trails with which agency or guide, and emergency and security administration.
Nepal uses different permit systems depending on the region. Some areas need a TIMS card and a national park or conservation permit. Others, like Manaslu, are managed through a special restricted-area permit.
Manaslu is not an ordinary open trekking route. It passes through a government-designated restricted/controlled area, so trekkers need a Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP) issued through the Department of Immigration. The Department's trekking permit page says foreigners entering designated restricted areas need a permit issued through a registered trekking agency. You can't apply for it independently.
Because the RAP already registers you with the government for that specific area, many in the industry treat a separate TIMS card as redundant. But NTB's public TIMS page lists Manaslu as requiring TIMS anyway. That gap is the source of the confusion.
NTB page checked: September 2026.
The NTB TIMS page lists these routes among those where a licensed guide and an agency-issued TIMS card are mandatory:
It gives the current TIMS charge as NPR 1,000 for SAARC applicants and NPR 2,000 for other foreign applicants. This is the most important current public government source, and we don't dismiss it.
The TAAN "where and how to obtain" page says TIMS cards are generally compulsory but lists an exception: visitors to controlled areas with permits issued by the Department of Immigration don't need one.
Manaslu is a controlled area and its RAP is issued by the Department of Immigration, so this exception appears directly relevant. TAAN does not override the Nepal Tourism Board. It is simply a second current source that points the other way.
| Source | Current position |
|---|---|
| NTB (published) | Yes. Manaslu Circuit is listed as requiring an agency-issued TIMS card. |
| TAAN (published) | No separate TIMS for controlled-area visitors holding Immigration permits. |
| On the trail (2026) | TIMS is no longer being enforced on the Manaslu route. |
| Places Nepal practice | No separate TIMS charge for the standard Manaslu Circuit. We reconfirm documentation during permit processing. |
The published sources are not fully aligned. That's the most defensible answer as of September 2026. Places Nepal's practice reflects what we see operationally and is not a government ruling.
Don't:
Do this instead: have the registered trekking agency processing your Manaslu permit confirm the current documentation requirement right before permit issuance. Permit processing is when the requirement becomes clear for your actual itinerary and dates.

Nepal's permit rules change, sometimes with little notice. If authorities begin enforcing TIMS on Manaslu, or the published sources are aligned in one direction:
Do I need a TIMS card for the Manaslu Circuit in 2026?
Published sources conflict. NTB lists Manaslu as requiring TIMS, while TAAN exempts controlled-area visitors with Immigration permits. TIMS is not currently being enforced on the trail, and your agency should confirm the requirement before permit issuance.
Do I still need the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit?
Yes. The RAP is required, and it must be arranged through a registered trekking agency.
Can I trek Manaslu independently?
No. Restricted-area permits are issued only through registered agencies, and the NTB page also lists a licensed guide as mandatory for this route.
Will I pay extra if TIMS becomes required?
Not with Places Nepal. We arrange any required permit on your behalf at no extra charge.
How current is this information?
NTB and TAAN pages were checked in September 2026. Always confirm with your agency before permits are issued.
