Kathmandu UNESCO Heritage Day Tour Overview
Kathmandu isn't just a capital city; it's a cultural hub where people from different backgrounds live together peacefully. It's a bit crowded due to centralisation, but there's a certain calm within the hustle and bustle. The city is adorned with historical monuments, religious sites (from both Hinduism and Buddhism), and cultural gems that give you a sense of inner peace—you won't need to search for tranquillity elsewhere. This one-day tour lets you explore some of these serene spots.
Nestled in central Nepal's high plateaus, the Kathmandu Valley consists of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur districts, standing tall at 1400 meters. While the city might be teeming with life, the outskirts boast natural wonders like the Shivapuri and Nagarjuna forests, providing Kathmandu with a touch of nature. If you want to escape the urban hustle, a refreshing hike is just a 30-minute drive from the city centre.
The Newari people are the original inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley and its surroundings. These folks take great pride in preserving Nepal's religion, culture, and civilisation through their ancient customs and traditions. The Newar community is known for its culture, literature, art, commerce, agriculture, and cuisine achievements. According to the UNDP's yearly Human Development Index, they consistently rank as Nepal's most economically and socially advanced community.
If you have a day to spare in Kathmandu, this tour is a golden opportunity to uncover the city's art, culture, history, and people. With an experienced guide, you won't just visit these significant sites—you'll gain valuable insights beyond what you'd discover on your own. Kathmandu UNESCO Heritage Day Tour Itinerary
The Kathmandu Day Tour begins with a private vehicle ride from your hotel to Swayambhunath Temple. The ride duration depends on your group size, but it usually takes only 15 minutes. After arriving at the temple, you must walk uphill to the main stupa, Swayambhunath. This stupa is positioned on a hill northwest of Kathmandu Valley, providing a 360-degree city view. Swayambhunath is a revered Buddhist shrine that is equally significant for Hindus. Since 1979, this site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its dome-shaped base and cubical structure adorned with Buddha's eyes. Swayambhunath is also known as the Monkey Temple due to the many monkeys that live in the surrounding forest. When you visit, be careful with any loose food items you might have.
The journey continues to Kathmandu Durbar Square, also known as Basantapur Durbar Square or Hanuman Dhoka. Hanuman Dhoka Durbar originated from the Hanuman statue set up by King Pratap Malla in 1672 A.D. This square has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to numerous historical temples, shrines, courtyards, and a palace that showcases medieval art and architecture. Enthusiastic tourists and locals explore the site, and history buffs can delve into Nepalese history at the onsite museum. The area also features small shops offering Nepalese handicrafts, making perfect souvenirs.
The tour will take you to Bouddhanath Stupa, another UNESCO World Heritage Site 8 km east of downtown Kathmandu. This stupa is one of the largest stupas in South Asia, standing at a height of 36 meters. It holds great significance for Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. Although damaged during the 2015 earthquake, it was reconstructed and reopened in November 2016. The grand Buddha Purnima festival is held at Bouddhanath, surrounded by shops and restaurants offering multi-cuisine delights. You can also purchase Buddhist-related handicrafts in the area.
Our Kathmandu Day Tour concludes with a visit to Pashupatinath Temple, a religious site dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is one of the four major sites for Shiva devotees in Asia, and the temple complex is located on both sides of the Bagmati River. The shrine was built in the fifth century and later renovated by the Malla rulers. It features exquisite wood carvings and a gold-plated roof. Unfortunately, non-Hindus are not allowed to enter the main temple, but they can explore the premises, which include many smaller temples dedicated to various Hindu and Buddhist deities. Pashupatinath attracts thousands of Hindu visitors every year, especially during the festivals of Shivaratri and Teej.
After the visit to Pashupatinath, our guide will drop you back at your hotel in Kathmandu. We hope you enjoyed exploring these remarkable sites with us.
