Facilities and Essentials
Water
While you can purchase bottled water from shops along the trail, it's better for the environment to use a reusable water bottle and fill it with boiled or filtered water from teahouses/lodges. You can also use water purification tablets, which we can provide upon request.
Communication
You can purchase a local SIM card in Kathmandu. However, network coverage may be limited at higher altitudes. Our head office stays in touch with your trek leader daily to ensure your safety. We're always ready to assist in case of any emergencies.
Travel Essentials
Visa
All foreign nationals, except Indian citizens, need a visa to visit Nepal. Most visitors can obtain a visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. To get this visa, you'll need a passport valid for at least six months, two passport-sized photos, and the visa fee. The current fee for a 30-day tourist visa is USD 50.
Here's some additional information I found on the web:
- Tourists obtaining visas provided on-arrival may stay no more than 150 days in any given calendar year.
- Visas will only be given in 15, 30, or 90 day increments, but may be extended at the Department of Immigration office in Kathmandu.
- Tourists may request the following visa at the time of arrival:
- 15 days multiple-entry tourist visa (approx. $30 USD)
- 30 days multiple-entry tourist visa (approx. $50 USD)
- 90 days multiple-entry tourist visa (approx. $125 USD)
Travel Insurance
Make sure you have adequate travel insurance that covers activities up to 5,500 meters. This is crucial, as it will protect you in case of medical emergencies or the need for a helicopter evacuation. Check with your insurance provider to ensure your policy covers these specific requirements.
Currency Exchange
It's best to bring major currencies like US Dollars, British Pounds, or Euros and exchange them in Kathmandu. Look for authorized currency exchange centers for a hassle-free experience. You can also withdraw Nepalese Rupees from ATMs, but be aware of potential fees.
Extra Expenses
Beyond the cost of the trek package, you'll need some extra cash for personal expenses. Here's a rough estimate:
- Daily Expenses: Plan for around USD 15 per day to cover costs like drinks (hot, cold, and alcoholic), additional meals, snacks, souvenirs, and tips.
Remember, this is just an estimate, and your actual expenses may vary.
Trek Season and Weather Conditions
The best times to trek to Everest Base Camp are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These periods offer clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and stunning mountain views, making for an unforgettable trekking experience.
During the spring season, temperatures at higher altitudes can range from a pleasant 20°C during the day to a chilly -5°C at night. Similarly, in the autumn, daytime temperatures can reach 25°C, while nighttime temperatures can drop to -10°C.
We also offer Everest Base Camp treks during the summer (June-August) and winter (December-February) seasons.
Summer Trek:
- Daytime Highs: 27°C
- Nighttime Lows: 5°C
Winter Trek:
- Daytime Highs: 15°C
- Nighttime Lows: -20°C
Please note that winter trekking in the Himalayas presents unique challenges due to extreme cold and potential snowstorms. It's essential to be well-prepared and experienced for winter trekking.
However, trekking during the monsoon (June-August) can be challenging due to slippery trails at lower elevations and potential flight delays. Winter trekking (December-February) also presents difficulties with freezing temperatures at higher altitudes and potential snowstorms.
Flight Delays
If flights to Lukla are delayed due to weather conditions, they'll be rescheduled for the next available flight. You can also opt for a helicopter flight, but this will cost you an extra $500 to $1,000 per person. To account for potential flight delays, we recommend adding two extra days to your itinerary.
Typical Day
Each day of your trek will be filled with unforgettable experiences. You'll witness breathtaking scenery, capture stunning photos, savor delicious local dishes, and explore charming villages. Our expert Sherpa guides will share fascinating insights about the region, while our porters will carry most of your luggage, allowing you to travel light with just a small day pack for your essentials.
Typically, your trekking days will start around 7-8 AM after a hearty breakfast. You'll then embark on a 3-4 hour hike, followed by a lunch break. In the afternoon, you'll continue your trek for another 2 hours before reaching your lodge. After a snack and some rest, you'll have free time to explore the local area.
Dinner is usually served around 6-7 PM, followed by a briefing on the next day's trek. After dinner, you can relax by playing board games, watching documentaries, or learning a few Nepali phrases.

Hiking to Everest Base Camp requires thorough preparation to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some essential aspects to consider before you set off.
Preparing for your Everest Adventure
As you prepare for your Everest adventure, it's important to understand the physical fitness requirements that come with it. The trek to Everest Base Camp demands more than just a casual stroll. It involves long hours of walking, often on challenging terrains that can test your endurance. To conquer this feat, engaging in cardiovascular exercises, such as hiking, jogging, or cycling, is advisable to build stamina and endurance. These activities will help you prepare physically and mentally, as they require determination and perseverance.
Additionally, strength training exercises will prove beneficial in preparing your body for the strain of carrying a backpack and trekking poles. Focusing on exercises that target your core, legs, and upper body will help you develop the necessary strength to tackle the demanding terrain of the Everest Base Camp Trek.
Essential Gear and Equipment
Packing the right gear and equipment ensures your safety and comfort during the trek. The harsh conditions of the Everest region require careful consideration when selecting your gear.
First and foremost, investing in a pair of sturdy trekking boots is essential. These boots should provide excellent ankle support and have a strong grip to navigate uneven and rocky terrain. Choosing waterproof boots to protect your feet from the occasional snow or rain showers is also important.
Thermal clothing is another essential item to pack. The temperatures in the Everest region can drop significantly, especially at night. Wearing multiple layers of thermal clothing will help you stay warm and comfortable throughout the trek. Don't forget to include a warm hat and gloves to protect your extremities from the biting cold.
A well-fitted backpack is crucial for carrying all your essentials. Look for a backpack that distributes weight evenly and has adjustable straps for a comfortable fit. It's also important to choose a backpack with a rain cover to protect your belongings from unexpected showers.
When it comes to sleeping arrangements, a sleeping bag suitable for sub-zero temperatures is a must. The nights at higher altitudes can be extremely cold, and a high-quality sleeping bag will provide the warmth and insulation you need for a good night's sleep.
Protecting your eyes from the intense sunlight and snow glare is essential. Invest in high-quality sunglasses with UV protection and polarized lenses to reduce glare. This will not only protect your eyes but also enhance your visibility, allowing you to appreciate the breathtaking views of the Everest region fully.
Hydration is key during the trek, so carrying a good water supply is essential. However, it's important to note that tap water in the Everest region is unsafe to drink. Therefore, carrying water purification tablets or a water filter is crucial to ensure you have access to clean drinking water throughout your journey. Additionally, high-energy snacks will provide you with the necessary fuel to keep going during long trekking days.
Ensure you have reliable trekking poles to provide stability and reduce the impact on your joints. These poles will prove invaluable, especially during steep ascents and descents, as they help distribute your weight and provide additional support.
Remember to pack a first aid kit containing essential medical supplies. This kit should include items such as bandages, antiseptic ointment, pain relievers, and blister treatment. Additionally, remember to pack sunscreen and lip balm with high SPF to protect your skin from the harsh UV rays at higher altitudes.
Luggage and Porter
You will have a porter to carry your luggage safely throughout your trek. Porters will be appointed to transport your belongings. One porter will service two hikers, and the total weight of their luggage should not exceed 18 kg. As a result, the baggage weight restriction per trekker is 9 kilograms. Our porters are never overburdened. Furthermore, we want you to bring a small backpack with you to protect your valuables and crucial papers. Please just bring what is necessary. Any excess baggage can be left for free at your hotel or our office.
