How about Hiking Everest Base Camp?

On this page:

Concrete walls, cubicles, and the constant hum of fluorescent lights - that is what my life had become. It was a comfortable routine but felt more like stagnation than anything else. However, everything changed when a colleague asked me a casual question that shattered the monotony of my days. "What's the most difficult task in the world?" they said. At first, I gave a lighthearted answer, "Ticking off my bucket list." But suddenly, my words hung in the air, and I realized that they were pregnant with possibility.

I never really had a bucket list, let alone attempted to fulfill my dreams. But one day, I felt a strong desire to do something exhilarating like climbing Everest.

The name conjured images of snow-capped peaks piercing the sky, defying gravity, and whispering tales of daring expeditions. While summiting the highest peak in the world was a dream for another day, the Everest Base Camp, situated at 5,364 meters (17,598 ft), seemed like an attainable first step.

My name is Cameron McDonald. I am from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. This is my Everest Base Camp story.

My Preparation

But, before the journey, preparing for a trek to Everest Base Camp is a significant undertaking, requiring both physical and mental preparation. My six-month preparation recommended by Places Nepal's professional mountain team, included the following key elements:

  1. Physical Training:

    • Cardiovascular Fitness: Regular cardiovascular exercises like running, swimming, or cycling to build stamina.
    • Strength Training: Focus on leg strength through exercises like squats, lunges, and leg presses. Core strengthening is also essential for carrying a backpack.
    • Hiking Practice: Regular hiking, preferably on uneven terrain and hills, gradually increasing distance, and carrying a weighted backpack.
    • Altitude Training: If possible, train at higher altitudes or use an altitude training mask to acclimate your body to lower oxygen levels.
  2. Mental Preparation:

    • Research: Understanding the challenges of high-altitude trekking and familiarizing yourself with the Everest region.
    • Mindfulness and Stress Management: Practicing meditation or mindfulness to prepare mentally for the challenges and to manage stress.
  3. Diet and Nutrition:

    • Balanced Diet: Eating a balanced diet rich in nutrients to support increased physical activity.
    • Hydration: Learning the importance of staying hydrated, especially at high altitudes.
  4. Gear and Equipment Preparation:

    • Selecting the Right Gear: Researching and purchasing essential trekking gear like a good quality backpack, hiking boots, layered clothing, a sleeping bag (you can rent on request )suitable for extreme cold, sunglasses, and a first aid kit.
    • Break-in Hiking Boots: Breaking in your hiking boots to prevent blisters.
  5. Health and Safety:

    • Medical Check-up: Get a full medical check-up to ensure you’re fit for high-altitude trekking.
    • Learning about Altitude Sickness: Understanding the symptoms and prevention of altitude sickness.
    • Insurance: Ensuring you have travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking (above 6000 meters).
  6. Knowledge and Skills:

    • Navigation Skills: Learning basic map reading and navigation skills.
    • First Aid Skills: Basic first aid training, especially focusing on altitude sickness and cold injuries.
  7. Logistics and Planning:

    • Itinerary Planning: Planning your itinerary, including acclimatization days.
    • Booking with a Reliable Trekking Company: Like my collaboration with Places Nepal, ensuring that you have professional guidance and support.
  8. Networking and Community:

    • Joining Trekking Groups or Forums: Engaging with communities of experienced trekkers to share tips and experiences.
    • Meeting with Past Trekkers: Talking to people who have completed the trek for first-hand advice and insights.
  9. Cultural Preparation:

    • Learning About Local Culture: Understanding local customs, language basics, and respecting local traditions in Nepal.

Trekking from Lukla to Phakding

We begin early for the trek and with a gentle introduction to the trail, winding through lush forests and picturesque Sherpa villages. The trek from Lukla to Phakding is where I got my first taste of the Nepali Village side, and it was unique, being how remote it was. Later that evening, we reached our comfortable guesthouse in Phakding and spent the night there.

36.jpgAcclimatization in Dingboche is a pivotal phase of the Everest Base Camp trek, offering trekkers a chance to acclimatize while exploring the stunning Himalayan landscape. On Day 11 of my Everest Base Camp trek, we began our descent from the remote outpost of Gorakshep. The trek to Pheriche was both physically and mentally rejuvenating, as we gradually descended to lower altitudes, providing much-needed relief for our bodies acclimatizing to the thinning air at higher elevations.50.jpg As we retraced our steps along the well-trodden path, the dramatic landscapes of the Khumbu region continued to enchant us. We passed by the stunning glacial moraines and meandering rivers, with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks guiding our way.

Day 12: Return to Namche Bazaar

It was hard saying goodbye to the mountains, but concrete buildings were calling (literally). We began our descent, retracing our steps through the Khumbu Valley.

The trek was a beautiful and challenging experience. Every step required effort, but the reward was stunning views of mountains and villages. The fresh air carried the scent of pine, with prayer flags flapping in the wind. Each turn on the trail revealed a new, breathtaking scene, from glaciers to the majestic Everest.

Despite the difficulties, such as altitude sickness and physical strain, my determination was bolstered by the support of my fellow travelers and the Sherpa guides. We were a diverse group united by a shared dream and a language of resilience. Every sunrise brought new strength and motivation to continue the journey.

I had an incredible experience in the Himalayas, and I am planning to go back. I was reminiscing about my phone call with Places Nepal. They believed in me, encouraged me, and helped me achieve my goal. The setup was excellent, and I received great support before and during the trip. I couldn't have done it without the team's help. I enjoyed returning to Namche Bazaar and cherished the moments when we shared jokes and drinks. I was glad to have completed the trek, and I'm now looking forward to experiencing the mountains again.
